Mobile Suit Gundam Seed (Kidou Senshi Gundam Seed) |

|
Console: Playstation 2
Release Info: JP 2003
Creator: Bandai
Kidou Senshi Gundam Seed, the game that follows the story of the popular anime 'Gundam Seed', is a good beat-em up, but lacks depth and is quite short. You play as pilot Kira Yamato, in control of Gundam ''Strike''. You'll get to select a ''Striker System'', be it nothing at all, Aile Striker, Sword Striker, or Launcher Striker. Each with its own pros and cons, combos and special moves. The downside of it all, is that you can only play as Gundam Strike in the Mission and Attack Modes (excluding the final stage, where you'll be playing as another gundam). The only way to play as the other Gundams is in Versus Mode. |

Gameplay: 7/10
The gameplay is very simple. You maneuver, attack, and move forward. There is a lot of action, combo-ing and some special moves, but it gets repetitive quickly. The possibilities for custom combos are virtually nonexistent, and you cannot link ranged and melee attacks.
A feature taken from the anime is your ''Phase Shift'' armor, unlike in the anime where it has a time limit, it goes down a notch each time your gundam is hit. When your Phase Shift armor depletes, your life will start going down. In Phase and Attack Modes, when Gundam Strike loses all notches of its Phase Shift armor, its Striker System becomes deactivated and you have to make do with no special weapons.
The points you earn in the game's Phase Mode contributes to your ''experience'', which upgrades Gundam Strike's ''OS''. When the OS levels up, Gundam Strike will gain a notch of Phase Shift armor, and it will experience a brief period of ''Seed Mode''. Seed Mode skyrockets the power of its attacks and grants it a ''x 10 score'' multiplier to each kill. It also makes your Gundam Strike invulnerable. Unfortunately, it only lasts for a very short period of time.
The difficulty in this game is set to quite a challenging level, and this might cause some frustration. There is also no difficulty control. So players will have to take on the moderate challenge.
The versus mode in the game provides a good opportunity for 2 players to pit their maneuvering and mech fighting skills against one another, and to use other main gundams.
Graphics: 9/10
The graphics are very good. The game is set in a 3D world. The Mechs are highly-detailed, and the backgrounds and environments blend well. The characters in the anime are also preserved in their anime form when seen in the interval slides in the game. All in all, the graphics are definitely 9/10. The only downside in graphics is an obvious pixelation or ''blur'' in certain backgrounds.
Sound: 10/10
The music from the original anime surfaces once again! The same kickass tracks from the anime are used in the game. The sound and music quality is top-notch. The sound effects are also spot-on and the music fits the mood of each stage. There are also voice-overs for characters, and they are some of the best in any video game.
Story: 6/10
The story follows the anime, with more enemies thrown in to lengthen the stages and battles. The story follows the anime well, and does not stray from the actual story. The story moves a bit fast though, covering the anime rather quickly. The big let-down, is that the story is not complete. The story stops at a certain point, in the middle of the anime, resulting in the lack of completion of the story. Because of this factor, several Gundams in Gundam Seed are not included in the game.
Replay: 4/10
The total number of stages in Phase Mode are few, allowing the player to complete the game in a matter of hours. The redeeming factors are an Attack Mode, a Versus Mode, and several Gundams to unlock. The Attack Mode is basically a stage select mode, where the player can compete against him/herself or others for the highest score. Versus Mode is more of a bonus, and it lets the player pilot other Gundams. Several Gundams are available for unlocking. Players need to bring their skills to the test to unlock these Gundams.
Overall: 7/10
The game is fun and adrenaline-pumping, but it lasts for a very short time. A player can complete, beat and unlock everything in the game in a single day. I recommend renting it first. If you're a great fan of Gundam Seed or love the game you might want to snag this title to revisit the fun gameplay and duel with friends over the Versus Mode again in future.
